gorjana has been coming out of Laguna Beach since 2004, and the place is all over the product. Where a Brooklyn brand gives you weight and edge, this is the opposite instinct: light chains, warm gold, pieces that look right with a tan and no particular occasion. The tagline on the box reads "with love from Laguna Beach," which is not marketing so much as an accurate description of the aesthetic.

Gorjana Reidel founded it with her husband Jason. She was born in Serbia and came to the States as a child; they met in college, married in 2001, and started the company three years later. Two decades on it has grown into more than a hundred stores and a thousand retail doors, and she still fronts the design.

The idea underneath it has not changed: jewelry meant to be combined. The chains are cut at lengths that stack without tangling and the pieces are priced so you can own several, which is the only way layering actually works.

One thing worth knowing before you choose. gorjana spans a real range, from gold-plated and silver-plated everyday pieces up through solid 14K gold with diamonds and pearls. Both are genuinely good at what they do, but they are different purchases with different lifespans, and we will tell you which tier you are holding.
