Kendra Scott started the company in 2002 with five hundred dollars, three months after her first son was born, working out of Austin. It is now a billion-dollar brand and she still lives and designs there, which is unusual for a company that size.

What made it work is the shapes. The stones are cut into custom silhouettes rather than standard calibrated sizes, so a Kendra Scott piece is identifiable from across a room without a logo anywhere on it. That recognition is the whole engine of the brand. People do not buy one, they buy the next one, because the pieces are designed to read as a set even when the colors have nothing in common.

The palette turns over constantly, built on natural stones that vary piece to piece. Two of the same style in the same stone will not match exactly, which is the point and is worth knowing before you pick.

The company organizes itself around three things: family, fashion and philanthropy. The last one is not decoration. They report more than sixty-five million dollars given to causes, along with a leadership institute for women entrepreneurs at the University of Texas and a foundation launched in 2023. For a lot of customers that is genuinely part of the purchase.
