The whole company started with a bead and a fingernail file. Elizabeth Newton was browsing AmericasMart on a lunch break in Atlanta when she found a chunky turquoise cross, filed a few down by hand, and strung them into necklaces as Christmas gifts for family and friends. Then she took them to a home show with no photographs and no business license, expecting to sell nothing, and sold ten thousand dollars' worth in under three hours.

Her children ended up stringing and counting beads to keep up. The brand is still run out of Buckhead and still family-involved, now in more than a thousand boutiques across the country.

The material is the part worth understanding. enewton is 14K gold-filled, not gold-plated, and those are genuinely different things. Plating is a microscopic layer of gold on the surface. Gold-filled bonds a substantially thicker layer of real gold to the base metal, which is why the brand can tell you to shower, sweat, swim and sleep in it and why the pieces still look right years later. It is the reason this jewelry gets worn instead of stored.

The line runs from the Signature Cross that started it to Hope Unwritten, Gameday and eCOllegate, plus egirl for kids. Newton's own rule has not changed: she will not sell a piece she would not wear herself.
